Saturday July 17 ride

The ride is to start at 7 am to Cook’s Creek.  I will need to ride short as I need to be home early.  Who is all riding and do we change destination and time of ride?

No sign of Radio Shack after stage 5 of the TDF (and how about those crazy Canucks!):

This the “Million Dollar Highway” up Red Mountain heading south out of Ouray, Colorado– considered one of the most spectacular climbs in the U.S.  That little green strip on the right is the river, 300 feet straight down.  Maybe highway 52E to La Broquerie is not that dangerous after all…

Next MIT ride?

I wonder if this might be the next ride MIT does:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5z1fSpZNXhU

Hi Roadies,

As per my e-mail, on July 3rd there will be a ride accompanying Tim Dellet to Roseau, MN on his way to Minneapolis for the Habitat 500 ride.  I suggest that we all meet at 8:00 AM at the tower as usual.  Then we can split up into groups for those who are doing the ride with Tim (Jac, Pete, Jim, and Ron are confirmed) and those who want to do the Richer ride (or not, if we all want to just ride part of the way to Roseau/Lancaster).  Not sure what kind of pace Tim will travel at, but I’m sure he’s packing a bit of gear, so please anticipate that this will not be a hammer-fest (do your own ride if that’s what you really want, or at least hold the reins tight until the ride back :) ).

Canada Day Ride

The annual Deacon’s Corner A & W ride was an unqualified success this year. Five riders—Mark, Merle, Hans, Ed and Jim were pushed by a strong tailwind all the way to Deacon’s Corner. We fully expected a hard fight against strong headwinds on the return trip but were pleasantly surprised after breakfast when the winds lessened quite a bit. So the return trip was not too bad, and we were able to make good time by echeloning it with short pulls. We ducked in under shelter at the Lorette Co-op gas bar for about 20 minutes, while the worst of a thunderstorm passed by, and were joined by a few bikers (Harley Davidson types) on a poker derby—nice people –really.

Pete’s latest ride

Check out the latest journal entry by Pete on Bike Journal – 419 KM in one ride.  We are not worthy, oh-great-one!

June 26th Ride

We’ve been chattering back and forth about the June 26 and July 3 rides.  Why don’t we meet at the water tower at 7:00 A.M. sat morning (as per schedule anyways) and decide then.  Bring your passports just in case.  Personally, I don’t mind riding down to the States on both June 26 and July 3.

My 98 year old grandmother, living in Altona, is moving to the PCH.  Today she gave me an envelope of old newspapers and newsletters that she’d saved over the years.  Some of you old roadies will remember the huge snow storm of March, 1966.  I was seven years old and I followed my big sister out of the house to stare at the humongous snow drift leading up and away from our driveway into what seemed at the time, a mountain no smaller than Everest itself.  We immediately began to clamber, push, pull, and crawl our way to the top.  When we finally stopped, we realized we were on the roof of the garage and looking at similar scenes up and down Ross Avenue (we lived right beside what is now Rossbrook House in Winnipeg).  All of that came flooding back to me as I read this article from The Red River Valley ECHO describing the ingenuity of some Altona kids as they kept their furnace running through the power failure just with a little flip of the bicycle.
